Accoya® Wood

Sustainable high performance wood – perfect for external timber applications

Chamfer board cladding, external reveal, architrave, and sill in Accoya®

Accoya® wood is a high performance wood. Created from sustainably-sourced wood, Accoya® undergoes a proprietary, non-toxic acetylation process that permanently modifies the wood to the core.

Accoya® has changed the whole way we look at and approach external cladding and decorative timber features. It’s unsurpassed stability, resistance to insect attack and resultant extended life of coatings, makes it realistic to use timber again in so many external applications.

It has the lowest shrinkage rate of any other external timber currently used today. Accoya® wood has a 50 year above ground warranty against rot and fungal decay.  It is light weight, has good lengths, and is environmentally friendly and recyclable. This makes Accoya® wood the perfect external timber*.

Accoya® cladding or Accoya decking can be a lot larger than a traditional hardwood due to the low movement with environmental conditions. This means we can manufacture a cladding with up to 178mm cover in a single piece ( maybe a little more if top fixing ), and still be confident in its performance.

External mitres can be done with confidence. The low shrinkage of Accoya® will keep the joints tight.

The benefit of Accoya® wood being so stable is that it can be painted, stained or oiled in dark colours**, with significantly reduced risk over other traditional timbers.

Accoya® cladding and screening in a black external oil

If you prefer the grey beach or weathered look, then Accoya® will grey off naturally highlighting the natural grain contours of the timber. This is perfect for Accoya cladding, Accoya decking, Accoya seating and Accoya screening.

Like all timbers, the process of going from freshly machined timber to weathered grey can take time and can be uneven or inconsistent during this period.

It really comes down to the level of exposure to the elements. Every side and level of your structure will be exposed to varying levels of environmental and weather impacts. i.e westerly walls have more exposure than northerly walls; eaves or no eaves; other structures or vegetation can shelter sections of walls; prevailing winds may be blowing dust and grime.

Accoya®board walk & seating left natural slowly turning grey.                                                                  Accoya® cladding with a grey oil.

One way to mitigate this is to use a grey tint in an external oil** so the timber is already grey before the environmental conditions start to weather it.

This way there is some surface protection from the harshest conditions, and it can provide a balancing of the greying off effect in those areas that maybe sheltered or where weathering inconsistencies may occur.

There are multiple cladding profiles Accoya® can be machined into, depending on the application and style you are trying to create.

There is also no reason you can’t use Accoya® wood internally. If the application is in a high movement, damp or high risk zone of insect attack then it makes great sense to use Accoya® wood internally for any timber application, not just cladding.

Some of the cladding profiles available are:

Paradise Timbers machines everything on site in our purpose built facility. We can run any size or profile, match an existing profile, or design a new one to suit any application.  No job size is to small.  If it can be machined from timber, Paradise Timbers can do it.

Accoya® can be submerged in fresh water! It has a 25 year warranty submerged in fresh water ( 50 years above ground ).

Accoya® was developed in the Netherlands and used extensively in their dike systems, so has proven history in these types of applications. This opens up all sorts of applications where Accoya could be used where other timbers couldn’t.

* Accoya® wood is still timber. It will still exhibit traditional timber characteristics and will react to the local environment it is in.

** Check with the coating manufacturer in regards to suitability with Accoya® wood.  Ensure a test piece is done before full application.
