Tips for Builders

Top tips to help your buying experience with Paradise Timbers – it pays to Plan ahead before you visit us.

Tip #1

What is your application and Where are you going to use it?

Timber has so many different properties and can be used in a variety of project locations if dealt with properly, don’t be afraid to ask our friendly sales team for help.

  • Inside or Outside
  • Stained or painting
  • High grade or standard grade

Tip #2

What does it need to look like?

We have over 300 different moulding profiles in stock and we can machine anything to suit your needs. So, having a sample of what you need or taking five minutes to browse the website before you come and visit us will save you time and help get things right for you. It will also give a chance to visit our inspirations page if you don’t really have a style in mind.

Tip #3

How much do you need to get the job done right?

There is an old saying measure 3 times, cut once! It pays to be sure of your room measurements so that you order just the right amount. With made to order products too little and you will incur extra setup costs to machine more, adding a little more saves loss of time on the job picking up more especially if we are on a 7-10 lead time.

Tip #4

When do you need it?

We hold extensive stock and will always do our best when you need help. If you can allow for our advertised lead time of 7-10 working days, you won’t be disappointed.

Tip #5

Do we have to make it?

If you cannot find exactly what you are looking for from our stock, then we can make it for you. This means there will be some one off charges for profile design and machine set up. Sometimes this can take a little longer to organise, but we want you to get the profile you want rather than being forced into a “close enough” decision. Having accurate measurements from the start will mean you get the best rate and takes less time.

Tip #6

If you don’t ask – you don’t get?

We don’t know your project like you, and there is no such thing as a silly question all we want is for you to have the best solution.  If you want your timber, laminated, grooved, end matched, coated, primed, delivered, curved or docked to length chances are we can sort it for you.  Simply ask!

Tip #7

We are open Saturday Morning!

Yep – every Saturday morning from 8:00am to 11:30am our team are in the Helensvale Showroom and here to help. We have a huge range of stock that you can purchase then and there. The Building and Design Centre showroom is open 7 days but is unmanned.

Tip #8

Don’t let the door hit you on the way back!

All our doors and door frames – are made to order, once confirmed – they are yours and we are unable to return, refund or offer credit for them. So please make sure you order wisely.

Tip #9

Look after your Timber

We supply beautiful responsibly sourced timber and recommend that you use the best preparation and top coatings. Cutek Penetrating Oils and tints provide consistently good performance and lasting quality look to your exterior project. Other coatings can be organised but maybe subject to minimum quantities.

Tip #10

Buy ‘Grown in Australia’

With a wide selection of timbers at your fingertips it can be easy to overlook the obvious. Consider buying an Australian timber species that is grown in Australia and manufactured locally as opposed to using and imported product. It’s a win-win for the you and for the economy.

Tip #11

Say What now?

Let’s sing from the same song sheet and be clear about what you want. We want you to get the right product. Give a quick call to our team to discuss anything you are not sure of and we can decipher the specifications together. That way we are using the same terminology used in industry.

A common example is a “quad” is not just a piece of timber that sits in the corner of a ceiling / wall, or internal corner of a wall.  It is a quarter of a circle – a “quadrant”.  So, if you call a piece of scotia or a piece of 19×19 a “quad”, we are going to give you the wrong thing.

Tip #12

The Lengths you go to!

EVERYTHING – except for FJ Pine is RANDOM length only in select grade timbers.  If you need a handful of lengths, we will TRY to pick the optimal ones from the packs based on best available with the timber we have.  Everything else is random.  Sometimes end matching can be done to reduce waste and in the right application means not having to join on a batten / joist.

Tip #13

Anything in beige?

Timber is grown by nature. All we have done is change its shape.  We are not the manufacturer of the wood; we are the manufacture of the timber profile from the wood.  Nor can we control the colour.  In its rough sawn state, we can’t see what the true colour of the timber underneath is.  Add the point that a lot of species change colour when freshly machined, and we will never be able to give you a perfect “set” of timbers.  Also keep in mind all timber species slowly change colour once machined.  Nothing we can do will change the way the timber will naturally age over time but the right coatings can slow it down.

Tip #14

It is all in the quote

Everything you need to know is on the quote.  If we have misinterpreted your request, or you have made an error in asking for what you really need, the quote is where we both have the final chance to pick up on it.  Please, please read the quote carefully.  What is on the quote is what you are going to get.

Tip #15

A living thing!

All the timber you receive is still subject to change.  The cell structure of the timber is constantly reacting to the environment around it, regardless of if it is coated or not.  When it is hot and humid or wet it will grow.  When it is cold and dry, or no humidity in the air it will shrink.  Even timber on 100yr old brides is still moving.  They are constructed to allow for this movement, and so should your project.
